I just turned 49. When is the best time for my first test for osteoporosis?
Is it called a dexa scan. I am close to menopause. I 've been getting only 3 or 4 periods a year, lately. Thanks in advance

(That way you have a baseline of what your "normal" bone density is). Art

Since I have osteoporosis diagnosed at 48, and my brother at 52, my
endocrinologist brought my son in at 21 for a baseline. Art S wrote: >"scullycat" > > >>I just turned 49. When is the best time for my first test for osteoporosis? >>Is it called a dexa scan. There is several factors who can determine who should be assessed for
osteoporosis. If you have at least one major risk factor OR two or more minor risk factors, it could be a good decision to have your bone mineral density (BMD) measured. Risk factors are: Major risk factors: - Age > 65 ans - Presence of vertebral compression fracture - Fragility fracture after age 40 - Family history of osteoporosis fracture (especially maternal hip fracture) - Systemic glucocorticoid therapy > 3 months - Malabsorption syndrome - Primary hyperparathyroidism - Propensity to fakk - Low BMD (osteopenia) apparent on x-ray film - Hypogonadism - early menopause (< age 45) Minor risk factors: - Rheumatoid arthritis - Past history of clinical hyperthyroidism - Chronic anticonvulsant therapy - Low dietary calcium intake - Smoker - Excessive alcohol intake - Excessive caffeine intake - Weight < 125 pounds - Weight loss > 10% of the weight at age 25 - Chronic heparin therapy SebB "scullycat" news:uAz_b.1155$f61.686@nwrdny02.gnilink.net... > I just turned 49. X-No-Archive: Yes
I'm 58 with a history of osteoporosis in my family - I didn't have a test for it until recently. Had I caught it a few years ago I probably would not have the dx of osteoporosis but would have osteopena (I can't spell folks so be patient and I top post - bad me). I think the sooner you get a test the better - and depending on your family history and lifestyle - start preventative measures. I had an early menopause (everything stopped dead at age 40 with no symptoms) and a couple of other things like family history that should have told me and the doctors to look closely If you don't exercise daily - start now. If you don't take calcium and D start now. Don't wait!!! Give yourself the gift of time. Get a test - it can't hurt. "scullycat" news:uAz_b.1155$f61.686@nwrdny02.gnilink.net... > I just turned 49.
