Question about Costochoniditis
2006-03-20 21:22:56
Costochoniditis. Is this fairly new? The reason why I ask is when I first
started posting in here, I explained/described my worst pain being in my ribs. No one mentioned Costochoniditis. One poster even said it didn't sound like I had FMS even tho' I had been diagnosed by a rheumy after being seen at a PMC for the previous (almost) year. My ribs are killing me today. I feel like there is no use complaining or talking about it, b/c the pain is still there, it's constant and I have no access, nor will I ever, to anything more than an aspirin or Motrin. Just bitchin', I guess. -- ˇ.ˇ´¨ ¨)) -:Ś:- ¸.ˇ´ .ˇ´¨¨)) Laurie ((¸¸.ˇ´ ..ˇ´ -:Ś:- ((¸¸ ˇ.ˇ *~*LiveLoveLaugh, and hangin' in there!*~* Paddle together, bail, paddle; paddle, bail; paddle towards the land. ~Hawaiian proverb

Laurie,
My rib pain comes and goes. When it starts out in the morning I know that the day is not going to be a good one. I am really having problems wearing a bra lately. Even my most comfy one is causing me problems. It was on Alt.Med Fibro that I first heard about Costochoniditis so guess it is common in FMers. Dana

Laurie,
Yes, I've had costchondritis as long as I can remember. If I use my upper body too much, like picking up a 35 bottle package of H20 at Costco and putting it in the cart, then putting it in the trunk, then taking it out of the trunk and carrying it into the house. I also get a work out walking my three year old Brazilian Mastiff, who weighs 100 pounds and thinks she should chase cars. LOL Mostly, I have pain across my ribs that can be especially painful near the gall bladder and feels like a gall bladder attack. But the worst is when I shift the cartilage in my sternum and it feels like a heart attack. I was at work once when it happened and a coworker walked in, saw me in severe pain, and was going to call 911 because he believed I was having a heart attack. This was not the first time I had experienced this pain and I told him to not call 911, that I would be fine in a moment. Of course, with this DD, I am never really "fine". Today I had a massage for the first time in seven months. The therapists gave me Kudos for being able to stand the pain of a full body deep tissue massage. I told him that I was gritting my teeth the entire time and only sat still for him because I knew it would eventually end. I took a hot bath with epsom salts and sesame oil when I got home. Now, it is bed time. Karen in San Diego ~*LiveLoveLaugh*~ wrote: > Costochoniditis. Is this fairly new? Hi Laurie,

No one mentioned Costochoniditis. If you look up Costochondritis you will see that it is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the breastbone (sternum). A bad case of costochondritis can include all the ribs in the chest & the back. Since Fibromyalgia isn't an inflammatory illness costochondritis isn't a symptom of fibro, though fibro can cause pain anywhere in the body, when I flare even my hair hurts. > One poster even said it didn't sound like I had FMS even tho' I had > been diagnosed by a rheumy after being seen at a PMC for the > previous (almost) year. So many people have been diagnosed with FMS that don't have it, by doctors that couldn't figure out what was really wrong, that any diagnosis should be verified by the "poke ouch test" (where they poke the tender points & you go ouch). > My ribs are killing me today. I feel like there is no use > complaining or talking about it, b/c the pain is still there, it's > constant and I have no access, nor will I ever, to anything more > than an aspirin or Motrin. Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory so if aspirin helps relieve the chest pain, I would say it is probably costochondritis, if aspirin barely helps then the pain is probably caused by fibro. The pain caused by costochondritis can sometimes be relieved by icing the place where the rib connects to the breast bone or spine. Either way pain hurts. :-( > Just bitchin', I guess. I wasn't diagnosed with it but one emergency room visit the doc said it might be Tietze's syndrome which is similar but er- different for reasons I can't quite recall atm. I'd gone in cause the pain was getting worse and worse which led to my pet icky-heart panic starting up *really* badly and my prn Xanax wasn't touching it. Someone here said it sounded more like Costo, maybe the difference is the inflammation? > My ribs are killing me today. I can't bare cold myself so I sort of prop myself in bed with lots of pillows for support and try to relax whenever it starts up again. > Just bitchin', I guess. I'm with you: rib pain is a bitch! Sometimes mine hurt at the front and sometimes at the back but the past few days, since a doc did an abdominal check thingy, one of my lower ribs on the left has been really annoying... you know the ribs that don't join at the middle? One of them, bah. No jeans for me. Vashti

I get that from time to time............and it hurts like a SOB:-( First two times I got hit with the pain, I thought I was having a heart attack (since I've had one I worry about about having another one) and they checked me out and said this is what I had.............I'm dreading the day I get another attack cuz I can't take motrin anymore:-( But the 800 mgs of motrin 3 times a day did help relieve it...............
