Asthma - autoimmune? (cross-post)
2003-09-20 16:09:18
I've read the FAQ's at: http://www.asthma.org.uk/about/faq02.php
and http://www.radix.net/~mwg/whatis0.html and see no mention of there. On another newsgroup (see header), they're claiming that it is (autoimmune) and provide these as "proof". http://www.buffalo.edu/reporter/vol33/vol33n12/f2.html (I think there's a "comma misunderstanding" there) and this http://www.aaaai.org/aadmc/ate/autoimmunity.html Is asthma (or any type of asthma) an autoimmune (disease/disorder)? A simple "yes" or "no" (if possible) from some of the experts I recognize here such as Colin or CBI would greatly be appreciated. TIA J

I posted those URL's to show the existence of similarity,
but that asthma is not an autoimmune condition. Reading the material would have shown that. No, under current medical knowledge, it is not an autoimmune condition. If you remove the parts contained in the commes then the sentence reads, "...autoimmune disease and asthma." Clearly two different things. I assume you are referring to the first Q&A. In it the author draws a distinction betrween asthma and autoimmune diseases and staes that they are not the same. > > Is asthma (or any type of asthma) an autoimmune (disease/disorder)? No. Some autoimmune diseases do affect the lungs but they usually produce an interstitial/fibrotic/restrictive pattern. The hallmark of autoimmune diseases is reacting to self antigens (you own proteins) whereas asthma is similar in that the immune system is reacting innappropriately but different in that they are forgeign antigens. -- CBI, MD
