Is a speck of blood in mucus normal when coughing?

ANON 2003-10-05 19:24:31

Hi, for the last few years and as long as I can remember when I have coughed
quite a lot, or when I have a cold, I get a speck of blood in the mucus that
I spit out (nice!). I have no other problematic symptoms, but just want to
put my mind at rest that this is normal.

I am 16, female, slight asthma, recent mild tonsil inflammation (on my
left), a father that smoked but I didn't live with from ages 5-13 (when he
passed away from lung cancer) but I'm otherwise healthy.

Thanks.

Lou

unlikely to be serious. It may just be a weak blood vessel that bursts when
you cough - I used to get nose bleeds the same way but grew out of them.
Having said that, it may be best to get it checked out, a blood test and a
chest x-ray may be a good idea.
